Phnom Penh, March 11, 2024: The National Police executed a significant operation last week, resulting in the apprehension of at least 353 individuals suspected of involvement in drug-related activities from March 4 to 10, 2024.
Mr. Touch Sokhak, Deputy Spokesman for the Ministry of Interior, disclosed that while the number of suspects rose by 34, there was a decrease in the overall number of drug cases compared to the previous week's tally.
In juxtaposition, there were 161 drug cases reported in the prior week, whereas this week witnessed 136 cases, with Phnom Penh alone accounting for 30 cases involving 50 suspects.
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Mr. Touch Sokhak detailed three major cases, wherein Phnom Penh and Svay Rieng were implicated in large-scale drug trafficking, resulting in the confiscation of over 2 kg of drugs, alongside weapons, vehicles, and motorcycles.
The scourge of drug abuse, not only in Cambodia but globally, is recognized as a catalyst for various crimes including theft, violence, and even international offenses. Consequently, the Royal Government of Cambodia and the international community have prioritized collaborative efforts to combat this menace.
Under the auspices of the National Authority for Combating Drugs, and with unwavering support from the Ministry of Interior's National Police Force, comprehensive measures are being implemented to tackle drug-related crimes at all levels, ensuring the safety and security of communities nationwide.
Since the onset of the 7th mandate of the National Assembly, the Cambodian government, led by Prime Minister Hun Manet and Deputy Prime Minister Sar Sokha, has identified drug eradication as one of its top priorities. This commitment is underscored by stringent measures, including Order 001 mandating drug testing for all civil servants, with severe consequences for those found guilty of drug involvement.
As the crackdown intensifies, state institutions are unequivocally instructed to uphold zero-tolerance policies towards drug abuse, with severe penalties awaiting offenders.
